CWH Volunteers At Annual UGM BBQ

We’re in the middle of summer, and Canadian Web Hosting is looking for ways to give back to the community. This year, Union Gospel Mission hosted their annual Summer Connect initiative, a one-day event that aims to aid and lift up the Downtown Eastside community by providing on-site essential services to Vancouver’s most vulnerable.

Canadian Web Hosting participated in volunteering at the food tent and served burgers, hot dogs, pasta, and freezies to over 4,000 people. Kids enjoyed mini-games, cotton candy, and bouncy castles. The event also had a variety of providers on-site who were offering different services to those in need, such as hair cutting, nail care, pet care, tax returns, legal aid, part-time work, and more.

UGM has been giving back to the Downtown Eastside community for decades, and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon. Canadian Web Hosting hopes to volunteer for many years to come. Here are some things our team had to say.

Kings Wong, VP Operations

It is always fun volunteering at the Summer BBQ. UGM does a great job organizing and giving back to the residents of the Downtown east side. I was surprised how many people we fed that day – as I was driving home, I saw people holding the meals we served 5-6 blocks away from Crab Park.

The barbecue really gives you a sense of the reach and how much impact this event can have. I’m always grateful to be provided opportunities to volunteer at events like this and I hope I can be a part of more events like this in the future.

There was a good turn out for the BBQ and the atmosphere was great. Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves due to the various entertainment activities provided by the UGM. I found everyone at the event friendly and helpful, and I’m extremely excited to participate in many more events like this one whenever the chance presents itself.

About Union Gospel Mission

It is Union Gospel Missions’s hope that by bringing the community together for these meals, those who are struggling with homelessness, poverty, or addiction, can learn about the programs that are available to support and help them overcome their barriers. UGM accepts volunteers and donations year-round. You can find out more about their mission and work here.
