The OpenStack Foundation released the 15th version of their cloud platform on February 22, with enhanced cloud federation, better integration of container services, and an improved dashboard.

The OpenStack Ocata release is associated with a number of enhancements that are supposed to further improve container workloads. The goal is to ensure better integration between the various container technologies and OpenStack services.

In this release, the container orchestration frameworks have improved support through the OpenStack Magnum project, including new support for the open-source DCOS. Previously, Magnum provided support for Docker Swarm and Kubernetes orchestration systems. When it comes to the OpenStack Kuryr container networking engine, it also gets a boost with this Ocata release. The CNI (Container Networking Interface) also gets the full support that contributes to the networking in Kubernetes.

The Ocata puts a strong emphasis on helping to enhance cloud operations. One help operation tool is the new os-profiler tool, which ensures the follow-up of requests through the entire OpenStack system. As a result, an administrator can easily notice any performance issues. For instance, the os-profiler can ensure the optimal visibility regarding the infrastructure resources, including the tracking of required time for the provision of services.

The Ocata release cycle also included updates to the OpenStack Horizon dashboard. For instance, the most obvious improvements are related to the ways how security and access elements are displayed. Previously, all security and access controls were contained in one single place. With Ocata, these settings are now contextually visible so an administrator can easily access the controls.

In addition, cloud federation has also been improved through the Horizon dashboard. With Ocata, Horizon provides an administrator with the options to choose various OpenStack Keystone environments within Horizon.

Cloud federation got the overall improvements with Ocata thanks to the changes in Keystone. Keystone makes it possible for a cloud administrator to define the default permissions set available for any user with the federated access associated with the OpenStack cloud. This allows the federation to be more seamless. Now, all of that is visible in Horizon.

These OpenStack Ocata improvements further drives OpenStack adoption of both private and public cloud deployments. The use of containers is extremely important for the easy and efficient OpenStack  management.

OpenStack is more accessible now than ever. The biggest change brought by the Ocata is an opportunity to operate your own cloud much easier and simpler. Nowadays, we’re expecting for these things to cost us less and do more with the help of OpenStack. Undoubtedly, these facts make the Ocata irresistible for numerous high tech companies out there.
