Working remotely has become more popular over the last year. More and more people work from home and are preferring to work from home. Or maybe you like to work in a café or library, regardless of where you work staying secure and safe should be a high priority. When using public networks ensure you are taking measures so that you are cyber safe.  

Working from Home 

Working from home is great but that also means you’re responsible for having a secure connection. With that being said, the first step to be cyber safe is to change your Wi-Fi name and password from the default ones. In order to complete this step, you must open up your IP address in your web browser. While you do this, you should also create a second guest network that is used for visitors and smart devices. Smart devices can be more susceptible to security threats, so it is great to add another layer of protection between your smart devices and personal network. 

Virtual Private Network 

You may also look into using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs are great because they create a secure connection between your device and the network. This means the information being sent is secure and encrypted. Think of a secure tunnel in which your data is transferred that protects it from outside threats. When using a VPN, there is less stress about connecting to free open Wi-Fi like the one that is being offered by your local coffee shop. If you are working anywhere remotely, then you will definitely need a VPN to be cyber safe.  

Prior to buying a VPN, you should look at what features you are looking for. For example, some VPNs have a limit on the number of devices you can install it on. We highly recommend that you avoid a free VPN; a free VPN will always have a catch by either having weak services (upgrading for better protection) or will sell your information to third-party companies. It is not worth the risk to get a free VPN. Finally, ensure the VPN is serving the purpose to encrypt your data. Some VPN services are more focused on creating a separate identity online so you can access content that is not available in your country. While it still provides a layer of security, using a VPN that emphasizes encryption is more secure.  

Extra Cautious with Cyber Threats 

Whether you’re working from home or the office it is also best to be extra cautious about cyber threats. When using your email, be wary about any links, downloads or images that may seem suspicious. Phishing scams can be disguised as emails pretending to be a person or an organization. As you work from home, you will be more susceptible to phishing attacks as the attackers want to get valuable information from businesses.  

Physical Security 

Finally, you should also be cautious of how you are working remotely. When working from a coffee shop or library, make sure you do not leave your device unattended. Moreover, try to keep an eye out for people looking over your shoulder for information. As you deal with sensitive data about your customers and clients, you should be taking all measures to ensure you are being safe online.
