These days, there are a plethora of holidays that people celebrate, giving businesses more opportunities to tie themselves to it through social media in the form of posts, tweets, and hashtags. However, with so many holidays, it can be hard for your business to stand out when every company is doing the same. So how do you separate yourself from the rest of the noise?

1. Is Your Brand Tied to the Holiday?

With such a large pool of holidays to pick and choose from, it’s best to select specific holidays that not only make sense for your brand to fall behind, but also give you an opportunity to promote your product. These days, people are less interested in what you believe in, and really only care about your sales or promotions, so keep this in mind as you select the holidays to hashtag

2. Is Your Hashtag Trending?

Even when we’re looking at a specific holiday, there is still the matter of choosing the right hashtag. Sometimes, there will be two similar hashtags, but only one is being used most frequently. For example, you may find #nationalbeeday and #beeday attached to tweets on National bee day. While both are very similar, #nationalbeeday is scoring up to ten times more hits than #beeday. Make sure your holiday hashtags are trending, or else you’ll find yourself lost in the clutter of things

3. Prioritizing

Due to such a substantial size of holidays, some new, modern holidays may fall on the same day as traditional ones. When this happens, note that traditional holidays are typically more widely accepted, and may have some significance to them. When picking your hashtag for the holiday, it would be wise not to include national popcorn day instead of something important, like Remembrance Day, for example.

Finally, if you want to celebrate hashtag days on social media, but aren’t sure how to keep track of them, SproutSocial has a helpful Calendar for Hashtag Holidays for 2017, which you can view here (PDF).
