Roy Sandberg is a techie, a father, a nerd, a friend, and Canadian Web Hosting’s beloved Tier 3 Support Manager. Roy works hard around the clock to ensure every web hosting customer’s service is running smoothly and he always goes above and beyond with requests—he even stayed up late to finish this questionnaire! Besides being a fantastic all-around guy and a technical expert, he has a lot of interesting quirks. Like his interest in snakes. Find out more below.

When did you join the CWH team?
July 2011
What brought you to CWH?
I worked previously in the web hosting industry for 8 years prior to joining CWH. I had a friend refer me, who like me, wanted to expand their skill set. On hearing what CWH had to offer in terms of technology, I was eager to join the team and learn more.
What was your first impression of CWH?
When I first joined CWH, we weren’t as big of a company as we are now. It let me get to know everyone on a far more personal level that I had at previous places I had worked. All these incredible people working together in one place with so much different technology—I felt inspired!
Who was your favourite superhero growing up? Why?
My dad, of course. He taught me everything I know about life. So many things that he secretly taught me over the years—sometimes I can’t tell if I’m pissed off about it or just plain grateful. Now that I’m a dad myself, I see myself resembling him more and more each day.
But, if I had to pick a superhero: the Hulk LOL.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
That’s a funny question because there wasn’t ever one single thing I wanted to be when I grew up. Although my list did strangely include (not in any particular order):
- A mechanic
- A surgeon
- A carpenter
- A race car driver
- And….a baker
What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t yet?
Skydiving is at the top of my bucket list. I’ve wanted to do it for as long as I can remember. Watching the “People are Awesome” YouTube compilation of people skydiving makes me want to do it even more!
What’s one thing you want everyone to know about you?
That I love BEER and BURGERS!
What is your favourite website? Why?
There can never be “one” favourite website! It’s too hard to decide. For now, I’ll just keep loving the whole internet.
What book are you currently reading?
A recent book I read is called “How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python.” I don’t read too much actually. The last actual book I read was a long time ago, called “Man, Woman, and Child”. I remember it because I still have it lying around.
What is the nerdiest thing about you?
I love DIY stuff. I am especially fond of carpentry. I love opening things up and putting them back together. This is probably a habit I caught on when I worked as a computer hardware technician. Although, now it’s advanced to rooting Android phones and I even once changed my phone’s broken display. I’ve serviced a TV and even an AirCon. Made furniture for the home. Even hot-wired an old boom-box to an even older Sony CRT Television (from 1981) to serve as a stereo speaker system.
What is one unusual or interesting thing about you?
Something interesting about me: I’ve taught myself how to outlive an Apocalypse, no joke. I’ve taught myself a lot of practical stuff which at this age, is either unwanted or taken for granted—like how to make a fire without lint while out in the woods. Or how to sharpen a knife so that you can shave with it. How to forage for food. The list goes on.
Yes, I’m a big fan of Bear Grylls.
Now something unusual about me: my love for snakes. Now, I don’t have a pet snake of my own, but whenever I see a snake I always have the urge to hold it—or chase it.
What is your favourite thing about being part of the CWH team?
It’s always been about the tech for me. CWH encompasses that to the fullest. There isn’t anything that we aren’t doing. At times, I have my plate full, but I guess that is what drives me forward.
What is your favourite thing about working in the tech and web hosting industry?
I feel like it’s empowering to a certain point. You get to be someone’s hero every day. And if you believe in karma, this has to add up to something. The best part of the tech and web hosting industry is that each day is brand new. You’re never bored. You constantly face challenges and hurdles that keep you on your toes. You’re always a student and yet for someone, you are a master.
What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you since working at CWH?
Customers explicitly asking for me by name. It’s a wonderful feeling to have someone you’ve never seen in your life believe in you. That gives you reassurance that you’re doing something right.
What is your favourite thing about being a Tier 3 Support Manager?
I love to teach and my role at CWH allows that to a certain extent. I enjoy training the new recruits who join the company and making sure they feel confident to start their job. But training and teaching does not stop at colleagues. As an extension of our work, we often end up teaching customers and even sometimes ourselves.
As the Tier 3 Support Manager, I, of course, lead the whole Tier 3 support team. You become kind of a role model, which creates a sense of responsibility that I enjoy taking on. Having everyone on the team be in sync and coordinated falls on me. Around the clock support, be it day or night—customer satisfaction is our utmost priority. And to be able to help the team achieve our collective goals and at the same time their personal ones, that is indeed what I strive for every day.
