We tested three popular frameworks. Here’s what they’re actually good for and where they fall short.

AutoGPT: The Pioneer

AutoGPT was the first viral AI agent project — give it a goal, and it breaks it into subtasks, executes them, and evaluates its own output. It can browse the web, write and run code, manage files, and interact with APIs.

Strengths:

  • Most mature project — large community, extensive documentation
  • Built-in web browsing, code execution, and file management
  • Supports multiple LLM backends (OpenAI, local models via Ollama)
  • New “Forge” framework for building custom agents

Weaknesses:

  • Token-hungry — autonomous loops burn through API credits fast
  • Can get stuck in loops without human guardrails
  • Complex setup compared to newer frameworks

CrewAI: Multi-Agent Teams

CrewAI’s approach is different: define multiple agents with specific roles (researcher, writer, reviewer) and let them collaborate on a task. Think of it as a team of specialists instead of one generalist.

Strengths:

  • Role-based agents — each agent has a defined job, tools, and goals
  • Sequential and hierarchical task delegation
  • Clean Python API — define a crew in 50 lines of code
  • Built-in tool library (web search, file I/O, code execution)

Weaknesses:

  • Orchestration overhead — multi-agent communication adds latency and token cost
  • Debugging multi-agent workflows is harder than single-agent
  • Still evolving — breaking API changes between versions

Agent Zero: Minimal and Extensible

Agent Zero takes the opposite approach to AutoGPT’s feature-heavy design. It’s a minimal agent framework — a core loop with tool use, memory, and communication — that you extend for your specific use case.

Strengths:

  • Small codebase — easy to understand and modify
  • Supports local LLMs (Ollama, llama.cpp) for fully offline operation
  • Docker sandboxing for code execution
  • Persistent memory across conversations

Weaknesses:

  • Smaller community and fewer pre-built tools
  • More DIY — you build the integrations you need
  • Less documentation than AutoGPT or CrewAI

Running AI Agents on Your Own Server

All three frameworks run well on a Cloud VPS with 4 GB RAM. If you’re running local LLMs alongside the agent (via Ollama or Open WebUI), you’ll want 16-32 GB RAM depending on model size.

For GPU-accelerated inference, our GPU dedicated servers provide the CUDA cores that local LLMs need. Running a 7B parameter model on CPU works but is painfully slow — GPU makes it practical.
