In honour of Community Manager Appreciation Day 2018, we thought we would feature our very own Marketing and Community Lead, Adelina Wong. Adelina is the glue that keeps our community together and she keeps an eye on everything from the website to social media to the blog. She sits in arguably the best seat in the office where you can often find her eating banana chips and talking to her pet snails (a curious gift from her Secret Santa). Find out more about Adelina and her time at Canadian Web Hosting below.

Name

Adelina Wong

When did you join the CWH team?

June 2017

What brought you to CWH?

I was previously working as a community manager in the food industry and I wanted to switch things up. Both my father and brother work in tech and suggested I give it a try and voila, the rest, as they say, is history!

What was your first impression of CWH?

Having owned a website for years, I thought I had a basic understanding of web hosting, but I was so surprised at how much more there is to it. CWH has so many different types of hosting available and runs a lot of cool projects.

Who was your favourite superhero growing up? Why?

Is Hermione Granger a superhero? She has magical powers after all. I always imagined myself as her – bossing the other two around, learning about all the interesting spells and potions. Not to mention she is such a badass.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A teacher. I had a fabulous grade 3 teacher who taught me to love reading. She was kind, but she was tough as well. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I tried my hand at teaching English while living abroad, but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. I dislike being the centre of attention so it was really difficult!

What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t yet?

See the Northern Lights!

What’s one thing you want everyone to know about you?

I love to travel and explore the world whenever I can. I share these stories on my travel blog Pack Me To.

What is your favourite website? Why?

Instagram! Because I like looking at pretty pictures. I follow people that combine a bunch of my interests from travel to hand lettering to chefs to funny comics. I’m always entertained and inspired by the things I see on Instagram.

What book are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading Rupi Kaur’s latest book of poetry, The Sun and Her Flowers, as well as a book by Helen Thorpe called The Newcomers: Finding Refuge, Friendship, and Hope in an American Classroom, which follows 22 immigrant teens through an English acquisition class as they adapt to life in the United States.

What is the nerdiest thing about you?

I love trivia! Every night at 7:30 PM, you can count on me being in front of the TV tuning into the latest episode of Jeopardy.

What is one unusual or interesting thing about you?

I can wiggle one ear and only that ear.

What is your favourite thing about being part of the CWH team?

I love how every day is a fun day at work. Sure, everyone has their own tasks and deadlines, but we all still manage to enjoy our days in the office. Plus, our shared love of good food doesn’t hurt either!

What is your favourite thing about working in the tech and web hosting industry?

How fast-paced everything can be. Things can change on a dime and there is always something to do. I’m never bored at work and every day is different. I love that.

What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you since working at CWH?

I was given the opportunity to present at iTech Vancouver on how to take your blog or passion project and turn it into a business. It was a happy union of my personal interests and what I do at work.

What is your favourite thing about being a Community Manager?

I love being able to connect with people—hearing their stories and learning more about their passions and interests. There are so many people doing amazing things out there and often they need a website. Being able to see their projects come to life and watch them succeed is so rewarding.
