Bing Social – Hot Trends from Facebook and Twitter Feeds
Instead of focusing every week on Google, I decided to shift it to another search engine by Microsoft called Bing!
In June, Microsoft Bing released Bing Social. It's a new section that displays the hottest trends from Facebook and Twitter. Bing uses these two resources to find out what links people are sharing, then aggregates that content and breaks out subsections of the topic. However, it is not using real time Facebook or Twitter data on Bing Social.
Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are placing so much emphasis on social media especially from Twitter and Facebook.
You can see why I recommend participating on those sites to help drive traffic to your site. With Twitter, to show up in health section of Bing, it's important that Bing regards your Twitter account as an authority in order for your posts to show up. That's why the Mayo Clinic Twitter Feed is considered to be an authoritative resource. But the question is how does one become an authority figure?
According to the general manager of Bing Health, Alain Rappaport:
"We have a regular editorial decision process to select authoritative sources, based on content and source review. We look at a number of dimensions, from authoritativeness to adequacy for our audience. while we are not actively soliciting sources in this space, suggestions can be made in this blog."
Of course it would help if you're working with a world renowned resource like the Mayo Clinic, but if you're representing a great resource it would be worth your efforts to campaign to become an authoritative resource.
BTW, here's what's trending on July 9, 2010 (hint: something to do with LeBron James!)
Users also have the option to display results based on the past hour, day or week and you can break it down by the source, Twitter or Facebook.
