Mihai: I truly appreciate your thoughts and comments here. It's refreshing to run across people, like yourself, who understands and appreciates this very topic of offline networking. Your sentence summarizes it very well here, "The human, personal interaction is the very fabric of a successful relationship and no social media tool could ever take it away." Thanks for all of your comments.

Scott: That's great that you were able to speak during Social Media Week and it's impressive that you continue to meet someone weekly; I'm sure that you inspire a lot of other tweeps out there to do the same. On the flip side, at times, due to geographical constraints, it is not as feasible to make that offline connection hence why social media is still the next best thing. We should talk about that some more sometimes. Thanks for your comment and your retweet of our blog post.

Very few people would have thought that social media would be the first factor in alienating people in the 21st century, but I think that this is more obvious these days than ever. There are too many facebook users with hundreds of friends and literally as lonely as anyone could be. Social media took “going the distance” out of the personal connecting effort and social media users are left just with the mirage of virtual friendship. It takes a true hero to reverse “the curse” of social media, and the writer of this blog is nothing short of it. A person not only able to amass almost 2,000 virtual friends or so in a relatively short amount of time, but also one willing to pick and choose many of these friends and spend in-person, quality time with them, sharing feelings and emotions and thoughts. The human, personal interaction is the very fabric of a successful relationship and no social media tool could ever take it away. I think that we are not very far away from running city, county, state and country based Facebook in-person gatherings, conferences and congresses were thousands and thousands of facebook friends will finally get to meet face to face. This is the true value of social media and we’ll eventually get there.

Thanks for the shout out! As I mentioned in my presentation during Social Media Week the power of Twitter comes when you take it offline. I'm constantly amazed at all the great people I have met through social media. The relationships both in my business and personally have been phenomenal.

And yes, I still meet someone through Twitter at least once a week over coffee.
